Ludham

In and around the area

The popular village of Ludham with its row of pretty thatched cottages is located between Potter Heigham and Horning.  The centre of the village is dominated by St Catherine’s Church, and the village pub, village stores, Post Office, tea room and butchers are all within walking distance.

A short walk or drive along Horsefen Road leads to the village staithe and green, which has a couple of shops on the banks of Womack Water, leading to the River Thurne.

Womack Water is home to Hunters Boat Yard; built in the 1930s by Percy Hunter with his two sons.  They are famous for building traditional wooden sailing yachts from the Hunter Fleet.  The yard was family owned until 1968 when Norfolk County Council bought the business as a training school for children and young people.  The yard was sold again in 1995, and the following year the Norfolk Heritage Fleet Trust took over, continuing with the traditions of sail training.

Things to do

Womack Water is also the base for the Norfolk Wherry Trust, home of Wherry Albion, one of only two remaining trading barges built especially for use on the Broads.  She is the only one available for hire.

About a mile and a half along the road from Ludham is Ludham Bridge, which crosses the River Ant, flanked one side by a boat yard and the other by a café and shops.

Ludham is a great base to walk and cycle, and there are some beautiful protected areas to explore the wildlife.  Ludham Marshes, How Hill and St Benets Abbey are all close by, and bicycles can be hired from Ludham Bridge.

If you want to explore the Broads by boat, self-drive boats are available to rent by the hour or for the full day from Herbert Woods and don’t forget, as a Broads Escapes customer you’re entitled to a 25% discount off day boats.
