Acle

Known as ‘The Gateway to The Broads’, the pretty market town of Acle is situated on the river Bure, around halfway between Potter Heigham and Great Yarmouth. Home to a vibrant weekly market and a number of historic sights, a trip to Acle is a must during your stay in the region.

Sights and attractions

The most prominent sight in Acle is the town’s church. St Edmund’s is one of 124 existing round-tower churches in Norfolk and is especially notable for its partly thatched roof. The oldest part of the church is thought to be Saxon and to have been built as far back as 850 AD. Further work was done on the building in the 14th and 15th centuries to create the church you see today.

Another important landmark in the town is Acle Bridge. The only bridge across the river Bure between Wroxham and Great Yarmouth, this is where you’ll find most of the moorings in the town as well as a pub, a coffee shop and a general store.

Places to eat

If you’ve rented a boat for the day, the most convenient place to eat is the Acle Bridge Inn or Pedros. In the town itself, you can choose to eat in the characterful Kings Head or visit one of the other restaurants located in the centre of Acle. If you’re staying in a nearby cottage, visit the local butchers or one of the town’s small supermarkets to pick up supplies.

Things to do

A visit to the town’s weekly market is a must. Held on Thursdays, it’s the perfect place to search for unique souvenirs of your trip. Every second Saturday in the month the town also hosts a farmers market, giving you the opportunity to sample some delicious local produce.

If you want to get out and explore the Broads by boat, self-drive boats are available to rent by the hour or for the full day from Herbert Woods and don’t forget as a Broads Escapes customer your entitled to a 25% discount off day boats.
